File damper is a device designed to impede the spread of fire through walls, floors and partitions. Its construction includes a galvanized steel frame and a fusible link, a heat sensitive device (usually set at 165° F). When the fusible link opens it releases the damper components to close. They are also listed as standard (static) dampers or dynamic dampers.

Type-A File damper: Used when the airflow interruption from the stack of blades in the fire damper frame is not a prime concern or consideration. Type-A dampers are the easiest and fastest type to install and are mostly used in low-pressure part of duct systems (up to 2” w.c.).

Type-B File damper: Used when airflow or velocity in the duct is a concern. The stack of blades in the fire damper frame is kept out of the air stream.

There are few precautions that should be taken care of while using File damper so it is best to have installed it professionally. Proper inspection should be done of Fire Damper to make sure of any problems occurring. Every Damper must be inspected once in one year after its installation and then the frequency of inspection should be reduced gradually. Moreover, the National Fire Protection Association and other authorities have decided Life Safety Code which states that fire and smoke Dampers shall require inspection and testing one year after its installation
